Startup Weekend Education – Trailer from StartupWeekendFilms on Vimeo.

Friday night: 60-second pitches that result in the formation of small teams around the best, most viable education concepts.  Educators validate ideas, then all attendees vote.  We hope you’ll pitch, but definitely not required!

Saturday and Sunday: Work days! Teams focus on user research, customer development, validating their ideas and building prototypes with the help of experienced coaches from the education and entrepreneurial world.  You’re welcome to stay and work as long as the venue will allow!

Sunday evening: Teams demo their education products and receive valuable feedback from a panel of expert judges.  Winning teams take home a grab bag of great tools to help launch their company!

Here’s some examples of startups that have come out of Startup Weekend EDU:

+ ImagiLabs’s Challenge Box– Educational adventure games for kids age 8-12 and seek to inspire them to explore real challenges until they find their moment of triumph

+ Qeyno is a career exploration game that helps inform students about possible STEM career options & offers guidance on how to achieve them

+ Kidfit Academy– A nonprofit running interactive physical & health education curriculum that empowers students to take control of their health & wellness with fun technology

Here’s some of the things you get from attending

  • + Delicious & healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner for the whole weekend
  • + A free .co domain name
  • + $2,000 of credit on Google App Engine
  • + $100 of AWS credit for hosting
  • + 50 free business cards
  • + Event t-shirt
  • + Awesome coaching by education startup industry leaders
  • + Fun swag from Google, .Co and more!
  • + A network of 120 new developer, designer & entrepreneur friends that are also excited about improving education

The Winning Teams will receive some cool prizes!

All of the pitches on Friday and companies demoed on Sunday will be educator approved and designed to solve problems in the education space, broadly defined (not restricted to K-12 or other “formal” education).

We hope you join us!

"I'm the CEO of Mobilogie, a mobile strategy & development firm. We've helped numerous clients (startups to multinationals) design and build their mobile strategies and products.

But I only wear suits when I have to - I'm also the CTO of Thirdshelf, an innovative mobile platform for the retail industry. I love getting my hands in the code, and designing beautiful software architectures that scale.

Eirene Seiradaki

I am currently completing a PhD in Classics focusing on ancient economics. I am passionate about meaningful education. I have taught classes at the University of Toronto and at Princeton University. My teaching experience involves a wide range of courses at different levels (from big lecture classes to upper-level seminars and language courses) and a variety of subjects, such as Classical Civilization and Myth, Classical Literature, and Ancient Greek Language.

My method of instruction is a synthetic approach that presents literary and iconographical sources (from ancient to contemporary visual representations). This exercise calls for a critical engagement with prominent themes encountered in Classical culture and allows for the past and present to illuminate and supplement one another.
Ask me about the Greco-Roman world and Hollywood films.

In order to invite students to study the liberal arts curriculum in more depth, we need to lure them to an intellectually stimulating journey. During this journey, my main objective is to equip them not only with knowledge, but also with analytical skills to confront various ideologies, perspectives, and social realities, whether ancient or modern.

Olivier Gagnon-Gordillo

I spend most of my time teaching and coaching young entrepreneurs while always trying to impact people in a positive way. I am a hard working business man and I am very dedicated to every project that I tackle. I also consider myself to be a Jack of all trades and I am always willing to learn something new. I currently work at SAJE accompagnateur d'entrepreneurs as an entrepreneurship advisor.

Always willing to share her knowledge and experience, you can find her regularly giving workshops at CatalisMTL (CEFQ). There, business model canvas, empathy maps and roadmapping are just a few of the subjects she addresses and teaches to startup owners.

A certified Scrum Master and Product Owner and an autodidact, she credits her hands-on and ‘learn by doing’ approach for providing the bulk of her education. She also touched multiple fields of interest during her formal training years at Concordia University, studying software engineering but also hand-picking classes in finance, managing, accounting, marketing and human resources.
